Linux distributions! Let's have a look
You might have heard about many Linux distributions and may be familiar with some of them like Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Kali Linux, Zorin OS, Ubuntu(of course) mentioning the few. But the list goes on. Have you wondered how much big the list is? Mentioning the numbers there are more than 600 (YES!)Linux distributions under different families, hence there needs to be something common in them. That common thing is Linux Kernel- The kernel is the essential center of a computer operating system and manages the communication between hardware and the software and also contains the essential drivers for particular hardware.(You can even download kernel's source code and edit own your own).
One thing to note here is that Linux is not developed by a single company like Microsoft or Apple rather there are different organisations and people working on different parts.
What are different Linux distros?
Please note that Linux is just a kernel( or core or Nucleus of an OS), it can't be said as complete OS, hence there needs to be some software's that needs to be packaged with Linux kernel to make it fully functional OS. Different software can be installed on Linux kernel to make it fully functional. Hence it concludes that distribution is a way of packing these software's and these software's are commonly known as packages and each package contains a specific application or purpose. That's why different packages are associates with different families of Linux.
Coming to the proper definition- A Linux distribution is an operating system made from a software collection, which is based upon the Linux kernel and, often, a package management system. The software is usually adapted to the distribution and then packaged into software packages by the distribution's maintainers. That's why there exists different Linux families like Debian(Ubuntu comes under Debian), Slackware, Red hat, Enoch etc (Debian and Red Hat having largest family tree). Each of them serves its own purpose ex- Cent OS(under family of Red Hat Enterprises) is used for servers, Kali for hacking and penetration purposes and much more. That's what makes a distribution different from another.
So, the question is who maintains these different distributions or so called 'distros'.
There are different organisations all over the world maintaining different Linux distros like Red Hat enterprises, Ubuntu, Offensive Security. Also there are some Linux distros which are community based like 'Debian', 'Slackware' etc maintained and updated through the work of many users who volunteer their time and effort.
However there's also a different open source communities on various platforms like GitHub, Bit-bucket, Klin and much more constantly active and making their great contribution in it.
